Biography

Austin was born in Lapeer, Michigan in August of 1840 to Asahel and Martha (White) Abbott, both formerly of Massachusetts. He married Mary Jane "Mollie" Ostrum and they had at least 2 sons (Charles and Henry) who survived into adulthood. Austin was in the Civil War and afterwards returned to Michigan, and was a member of the GAR (Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Civil War veterans who served in the Union forces). The 1880 census lists his occupations as running a general store and farming. He passed away in 1898.

"Austin Abbott, long of Lapeer but recently at West Branch, died there September 16, 1898. Funeral at Lapeer and buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Was a member of GAR. He was born at Abbott homestead near Lapeer August 11th, 1840. Was in Civil War and returned to Lapeer. About 15 years ago moved to West Branch. Left wife and sons Charles and Fred. Also his mother Mrs. Asahel Abbott; a sister Mrs. E.T. Slayton of Lapeer, and brother Henry Abbott of Lapeer."
