DAUGHTER OF INDIANA HERO DIES

Mrs. Inez C. Piatt Was Widow of Descendant of Famous Cincinnati Merchant

Special Dispatch to the Enqirer

San Diego Cal., May 24.— Mrs. Inez C. Piatt, daughter of Dr. David B. Abbott, one of four secret agents who frustrated the plot to assassinate Oliver P. Morton, Civil War Governor of Indiana, died here last night at the home of her son, David A. Piatt, assistant managing editor of the San Diego Morning Independent.

Death followed an illness of almost nine years. Mrs. Piatt ws born July 31, 1848, in Indiana and lived there through many of the stirring events of American history. As a girl, while her father was risking his life in the Secret Service of the Union and her three brothers were at the front, she witnessed the flight through Indiana of General John Morgan, Confederate raider, prior to his capture and incarceration in the Columbus (Ohio) Penitentiary. She also helped feed Hobson and Shackelford’s Cavalry, which ran down Morgan and his men.

At the outbreak of the Civil War, the Abbotts resided in a hotbed of sedition, where Knights of the Golden Circle had their strongholds. Her father, too old to go to the front, joined the secret service and, in disguise, succeeded in joining a lodge of the Circle in Illinois, where he learned of the plot to assassinate Morton and capture Indianapolis, a strategic point for the movement of troops southward.

Mrs. Piatt, for a number of years, was a teacher in the public schools of Indiana. In 1874 she was married to Jacob Piatt, member of a pioneer Kentucky family.

Captain Piatt was a charter member of the Society of Cincinnati, composed exclusively of officers of the Revolution. His son, John H. Piatt, who wrecked his large fortune in keeping the Northwestern army in rations during the War of 1812, was one of Cincinnati’s merchant princes.

Garfield Park originally was named for him. Mr. Piatt was a cousin of John James and Sarah Piatt, of North Bend, Ohio, called “The Brownings of America” by William Dean Howells. Colonel Donn Piatt, journalist, author and diplomat, and General A. Saunders Piatt also were his cousins. General Ben Piatt Runkel, one of the heroes of the Battle of Shiloh, was another cousin. 1913.

Mrs. Piatt also descends from revolutionary stock. Her paternal grandfather and six of his brothers were revolutionary officers. She was of the same branch of the Abbott family that produced Jacob Abbott and John S. C. Abbott, famous editor. She was a niece of the late Edward G. Cornelius, Indianapolis merchant prince.

For many years Mrs. Piatt was clerk of Rojers Association of Universalists in Indiana.

Funeral services will be held in the Benbough Chapel, San Diego, Thursday at 2 o’clock. Burial will be made beside her husband in the cemetery at Petersburg, Ky.
