In 1850 four year old Sarah was the eldest of three children of Samuel and Jane Adair, farmers in Washington Township, Kosciusko County, Indiana.[1]

In 1856 ten year old Sarah and family were recorded as having just arrived (within the last year) in Center Township, Decatur County, Iowa.[2] Sarah was now the eldest of five children.[2]
