Richard was severly wounded at SEVEN PINES during the CW.After his wounds, he served as Staff Officer for General Wheeler until September 1863 when he was captured near NASHVILLE, TENN. He was a prisoner from September 1863 through June 1865. Richard was one a group of prisoners later known as the "immortal 600," ("Immortal 600", arrived at Fort Pulaski near the end of October 1864. Confederate prisoners from Fort Delaware were placed on the beach in front of Union batteries on Morris Island, South Carolina. The second group consisted of 600 Confederate officers. These 600 men eventually came to be known as "The Immortal 600". These Confederate soldiers were place directly in the line of fire protecting Union soldiers with their bodies.)
Richard Adams wrote a letter on August 21,1864 on board the U.S.Steamer"Cresent" to LOTTIE.
After the war, Richard became an Engineer and PostMaster of Radford.[1]
