Biography

James Thomas Akers was born on 16 December 1890 in Floyd, Virginia. His parents were John Calloway "Calvin" Akers and Malinda Epperly.[1] Most later records list his birth year as either 1892 or 1893.

The 1900 U.S. Census lists him living in the Alum Ridge District of Floyd, Virginia, with his parents and three siblings: "Ulalah" (Eulaia), Vada, and Peachie (Aaron).[2] His father is a Farmer. Also in the household is a 45-year-old aunt named Lizza Cunningham. By 1910, the family had moved to the town of Christiansburg.[3]

James T. Akers married Mary Elizabeth Brown on 8 October 1912.[4] He was 22 years old and she was 18. The 1920 and 1930 U.S. Census records show the two of them living together in Christiansburg.[5][6] James is listed under his middle name, "Thomas Akers", and worked as a Painter. They had one daughter, Mary Elizabeth (Akers) Pannell, who first appears in the family's 1940 U.S Census entry[7]

James T. Akers died on 30 March 1966.[8] He and his wife are buried together at Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg, Virginia.[9]
