Biography

Vernon was born in 1918. He is the son of Charles Akes and Vera Lake.[1]

He passed away on the 24th December 1941, at Kimpston, England, and his death was registered in Queensland in 1943.[2]

Sergt.-Pilot Vernon Akes.

ROSEWOOD, Jan. l:--Expresslons of deep regret were heard in Rosewood this week at the news of the death of Sergeant Pilot Vernon Charles Akes, Rosewood's first young pilot to take part in aerial operations overseas.

His parents, Mr. and Mrs.Charles Akes, while visiting relatives at Southport, received advice that their son had died from injuries received during air operations on December 24, on service abroad.

Sergeant Pilot Akes, who was 21 years of age, was their only child. Before enlisting he was a member of the Brisbane Aero Club, and held an advanced "A" certificate. He was born at Rosewood, and was educated at the Rosewood State School and the Ipswich Grammar School. Sergeant Pilot Akes completed his Air Force training at Lindfield, Archerfield, and Am- berley. He was very well and favourably known in his home town.

In the early stage of his air training he regularly motored from Rosewood to Archerfield and covered some early morning hours of training before returning to begin his daily work at hls father's plumbing business at Rosewood.

Six months ago Sergeant Pilot Akes went to England, where he was attached to a bomber squadron of the R.A.A.F. His parents have been advised that their son's funeral is to take place today, January 1, at Wytok, England.


AKES.—In cherished remembrance of Sgt-Pilot Vernon Charles Akes, captain of a Stirling bomber, died of injuries received in air crash on Dec. 24th, 1941, at Kimpston, England, beloved only Child of Vera and Charles Akes, Rosewood, aged 23 years.[1]
