Note N831Police officer murdered in Gorleston - 1909. 1
The summer calm of Gorleston was broken on Wednesday 18 August 1909, by the murder of a police officer in broad daylight and the wounding of another man and two women who went to his aid. 1 murdered policeman was Charles Algar, who was 40 years of age and had served 14 distinguished years in the Borough Force. Constable Algar was a married man and it was the sad and painful duty of Chief Inspector Moore of Great Yarmouth to break the news to Mrs Algar and the couple's five children. 1 man subsequently charged with the murder was Thomas Allen of 12 St Andrew's Road, Gorleston. He was 53 years old and a vermin catcher, petty thief and poacher. 1
Constable Algar had been sent to St Andrews Road after reports had reached Gorleston Police Station that Allen was once again assaulting his wife. A crowd had gathered near the house and on arrival at the scene the officer asked Allen about the disturbance. "Come into the garden and I will tell you all about it," said Allen. 1 Algar walked into the garden whereupon Allen picked up a weapon, which was concealed in a potato patch and discharged the gun at point blank range. The Constable received the charge in the right side of his head, face and neck. Although terribly disfigured and mortally wounded, he managed to retreat some 20 paces before collapsing to the ground. 1
On hearing the shooting a Mr Warner and two neighbours - Miss Popay and Miss Lancaster - approached Allen whereupon he discharged the weapon again. Mr Warner took the majority of the blast in the head and neck and the two women received injuries to the legs and hands. 1
The news of the incident reached Inspector Walter Moore at Gorleston Police Station and he, together with Constable Tink and other officers, went immediately to the scene. The house was cordoned off by police officers and after insuring that the injured were removed to Gorleston Cottage Hospital, the Inspector engaged Allen in conversation from a distance. Gradually the Inspector moved closer and, picking his moment, sprang forward and pinned AllenÌs hand holding the gun against the wall. 1 murderer was quickly overpowered and the gun wrenched from his grasp. Subsequent examination of the weapon revealed it to be fully loaded, a double- barrelled breechloader type with the barrels cut so that they were only about a foot long. In addition the stock had been broken off close to the trigger. 1 prisoner was lodged at Gorleston Police Station and a four man escort removed him to the Great Yarmouth lock-up. 1
Allen was found guilty of the murder of Constable Algar and sentenced to be hanged. He was subsequently reprieved, however, and sent to Broadmoor for the rest of his days. 1
