Biography

Peter Alisson was a convict after the Third Fleet transported to New South Wales

Peter Alisson was 15 years old when he was tried in Cork on 12 January 1838 and found guilty of the crime of larceny (shoplifting)[1]. He received a sentence of seven years transportation[2] Peter was sent to Kilmainham Prison in Dublin[3] prior to his voyage to New South Wales on the Clyde arriving via the Cape of Good Hope on 10 September 1838.

The records stated that Peter was Catholic, could read and write and his trade was errand boy. He had already had two 3 month custodial sentences. They also stated that Peter had a sister and brother-in-law called "Fawcett" who was in the "28th Regiment".[1]

Peter was five feet, one inch tall with fair pale complexion, light brown hair and dark grey eyes. He had a large diagonal scar on the center of his forehead and a small scar on each side of the same. Two crosses and the letters "PA" were on the inside of his left arm.[4].

Peter was granted permission in 1843 to marry Mary Lynch, a free immigrant. He had obtained his ticket of leave by this time and was living in Melbourne.[5] The marriage took place and was registered in 1843.[6]

Peter obtained his ticket of leave in August 1842[7] and his certificate of freedom on 16 June 1845. The records noted that his residence in each case was Melbourne, Victoria.[4].

Peter died in Ashfield, New South Wales, on 10 June 1899[8]. His death certificate confirmed his marriage to Mary Lynch, said he was a gardener and had spent about 45 years in "the Australian Colonies" of which ten years had been spent in Victoria. He was buried at the Roman Catholic cemetery at Rookwood.
