Biography

John James Ambrose was the son of James Ambrose, from the townland of Dunganville Lower, County Limerick. He was born in approximately 1835-1842.

John's father James Ambrose died aged 72y in 1874. John was present at his father's death.

In 1876, John married Catherine Woulfe from the townland of Rooskagh East. They married in the RC church of Ardagh. The witnesses to the marriage were Thomas Woulfe and Mary Woulfe.

John's wife Catherine died in January 1877. The cause of death is stated as "exhaustion after tedious confinement".

In December 1877, John married Catherine Creedon from the townland of Arddrine. They married in the RC chapel of Clouncagh. John's age was recorded as 35y and Catherine's as 26y. His residence is recorded as Dunganville. The witnesses to the marriage were Bridget Liston and Michael Ambrose.

John and Catherine lived in the townland of Dunganville Lower. They had children James (b1879), Mary (b1881), Honoria (Norah) (b1882), Thomas (b1884), and Catherine (Katie) (b1890).

John Ambrose died of pneumonia aged 61y at Dunganville in 1896. Their daughter Mary was present. John's estate was executed by Timothy Hickey and was worth £362.

Catherine died in 1931 aged 86y.

Research Notes

All 4 households in Dunganville Lower in the 1901 and 1911 censuses are Ambrose. It can't be assumed that records of Ambrose from Dunganville relate to the same immediate family. There is a death record of a Catherine Ambrose from Dunganville in 1892 age 80y, with a daughter Bessie Nash in Ardagh. This may be John's mother but care is needed. There is a Bessie Nash married to William Nash in Ardagh in 1901 but no marriage record found.

Dunganville appears to be in the parish of Newcastle rather than Ardagh. If so, it may be possible to find John's birth record and his parents' marriage record, as Newcastle parish records starting 1815 (with some gaps) are available at NLI.

Age and Date of Birth

The ages of John, Catherine, and their children as recorded in official documents (civil records, census) are inconsistent.

  • Marriage to Catherine Woulfe: 1876, 35y => DOB 1841-42
  • Marriage to Catherine Creedon: 1877, 36y => DOB 1841-42
  • Death: 1896, 61y => DOB 1835
