Just was born in 1799 at Gjemsø, Solum.[1] He was the son of Anders Halvorsen Smed and Beate Cathrine Amundsdatter.[1]

In the 1801 census at Omborgsnes under Rugtvet, Bamble, the 2 years old Just Andersen is listed with his parents Anders Halvorsen and Anne Beathe Amundsdatter.[2]
