Biography

Frederick was born in 1819. About 1844, when he was about 25 years old, he married Lilly Elizabeth (UMN). They had four known children:

  1. Frederick Rinehart Washington Anspach (1845-1849) Died young
  2. Virginia Eugenia Anspach (1847)
  3. John L Anspach (1849)
  4. Lilly Estelle Anspach (1853-1857) Died young

In 1850, the family was in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, where Frederick was serving as a minister. The household consisted of Frederick (33, PA), Elizabeth (28, VA), Virginia (3, PA), and John J (1, PA), along with two other young adults: Catharine Cain (20, PA) and William Gridy? (25, PA, teacher). Frederick valued his property at $10,000.[1]

Lilly passed away in 1858, and Frederick married for the second time to Susan (Mathiot) Gale, widow of George Gale, who had one child from her first marriage. In 1860, the blended family was in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, with the following household members: Frederick (40, PA), Susan (29, PA), Eugenia (13, PA), John (10, PA), Georgietta Gale (5, PA), and A J Mathiot (40, PA), who was Susan's brother. Frederick was a minister, valuing his real estate at $48,000 and his personal estate at $19,848.[2]

NOTE: Although both the land and the personal property values are shown on Frederick's census line, he owned no slaves in 1850, so my suspicion is that he "inherited" them with his 2nd marriage. The 1867 Slave Statistics for Maryland indicates that Susan M Anspach owned at least 23 slaves at that time (after Frederick's death).

Frederick passed away in 1867[3] and is buried at the Reformed Graveyard in what is today Jefferson County, West Virginia.[4] [5]

Research Notes

  • Will of George Gale, Frederick Anspach or Augustus Mathiot might give information on original slave owners.
