Biography

Jan IV was a Dutch Knight (Ridder)

Jan IV lord of Arkel was born around 1295 and passed away around May 1360 he was a son of Jan III Arkel and Mabelia Voorne

Jan IV followed in his fathers footsteps probably at the beginning of 1325.

On July 28, 1327 he was still "Knape" (Schildknaap) and married Irmgard von Kleef, daughter of Otto, Graf von Kleef, and Mechtild von Virneburg. Some say the marriage took place in Keulen (Koln). Jan and Irmgard had two children, Otto and Mechtild, both of whom would have progeny.

He was called Knight in 1328.[1]

In 1335 Jan participated with 55 other knights in a crusade to Pruisen (Germany) with the Count of Oostervant, which is the later Count Willem IV. Jan was a witness at a variety of settlements.[2]

In 1335 and 1339 he borrowed money and was a guarantor for the debts of Duke Reinald II of Gelre.[3]

In name of Willem IV he received the stewardship (voogdij) of Utrecht. But when his half brother Jan in 1342 became bishop he withdrew from the politics of this.[4]

Jan supported his half brother Jan in 1349 against the battle with the Bronckhorst party. Probably done in his own interest as his brother owned him a lot of money.[5]

In 1350 he supported Reinald II of Gelre in his battle against his brother Eduard by the siege of Tiel on August 24, 1350 when Reinald III conquered the city.[6]

Jan IV played an important part in the civil war in Holland and Hainault (which was in a personal union with Holland) in 1350 between the 'Hoeken' (Hooks) and the 'Kabeljauwen' (Cods). The Hooks were fighting for Margaretha, countess of Holland, Zeeland and Hainault, supported by England, while the Cods were fighting for Margaretha's son Willem V of Bavaria, who was ruling Holland in Margaretha's name. A supporter of the Kabeljauwen, Jan took the side of Willem V, who defeated the Hooks and the English in the Battle of Vlaardingen in 1351.[7]

On December 30, 1351 Jan became "Ruwaard" of Holland for Willem V.[8] In 1352 Jan was give the honor title of "Baanderheer" a title only given to 4 nobles.[9]

When Willem V in 1351 declared confiscation of the properties of the Hooks, on April 21, 1351 Jan van Arkel was given: The property of Leck, which was owned by the Hooks supporter Jan II van Polanen.[10]

In 1354 Margaretha saw herself compelled to come to an understanding with her son, who was recognised as count of Holland and Zeeland, while she remained countess of Hainault. Margaretha died two years later, leaving Willem in possession of the entire Holland-Hainault inheritance.

In 1357 Willem V was declared insane and his brother Albrecht van Beieren took over and became "Ruwaard". Albrecht made peace with the Hooks and Jan was ordered to give the property of Leck back to the Polanen. Jan van Arkel disagreed with giving the property Leck back. He supported in 1358 the revolt of the city Delft against Albrecht van Beieren.[11]

Shortyly after Jan van Arkel made peace with Albrecht on May 29, 1359 he passed away. His son Otto was called Lord of Arkel on May 6, 1360. Jan van Blois wrote an excuse for not attending Jan's funeral on May 11, 1360. Therefore Jan IV died between 12 November 1359 and 6 May 1360, and was succeeded by his son Otto.[12]

Van Arkel-62 and Arkel-29 appear to represent the same person because: I created the new one because the old one didn't turn up in the search.
