Biography

Born about 1740 Yorkshire

Elizabeth Arnot was born about 1740 probably in the area of East Yorkshire northeast of Pocklington. This is estimated on the basis of her marriage 1762 in Skirpenbeck and her children in Yapham. It seems extremely unlikely that she was younger than 18 or older than 26 in the year of that marriage, so 1736-1744. Her birth has long been associated with a baptism in Slingsby, across the Derwent in North Yorkshire but there is no obvious confirmation for this belief. [1]

During the eighteenth century personal names were gradually given standard spellings, and most people in East Yorkshire called Arnat, Arnitt etc. became Arnot(t). The name was not at all common. On the other hand the forename Elizabeth continues (unusually) to have many variations (perhaps 30) to the present day, Elisabeth, Elyza, Liz, Lizzie, Beth, Betty etc. Some of them like Alice and Elise are usually thought of as entirely different names.

Marriage 1762 Skirpenbeck

In 1762 James Silburn married Elizabeth Arnitt or Arnot in Skirpenbeck immediately north of Full Sutton where he was born and about five miles north-west of Yapham where they baptised children. [2]

Children 1770-1778 Yapham

Four children are baptised in Yapham cum Meltonby by James Silburn in a steady stream Richard 1770, John 1773, William 1775 and Thomas 1778. For the last two the mother's name is also given as Elizabeth. We can reasonably assume these are the same James and Elizabeth married in Skirpenbeck but there may well also be earlier children in the 1760s.
