Roald Rygg is mentioned in the Heimskringla. There is is told how he struggled against king Harald Hårfagre in a battle at Hafrsfjord in 872, together with his brother Hadd "the Hard". Roald and Hadd were both from Hadeland's King's family (Hadeland - southern part of Oppland), thus the reason to believe that their father was Aslak. In the traditions of Vinje and Rauland the two brothers are called Raud Rauland and Hadd Haddeland. In the traditions from Heddal in Telemark he is known as Raud Rygin and had a farm Ryen in the area. He is also mentioned in Sturlubok and in chapters 173 and 185 in Hauksbok in Landnåma, there called Raud Ruggu of Numedal. In another tradition he may be the same person called King Rollag of Rollag. In Landnåma it is told that he has a son called Torstein Svarfader, no doubt referring to Svarfaderstadir or Svarstad in Lardal in Vestfold. It is also mentioned a daughter Ingebjørg, who was married to Sigmund from Vestfold, probably on Skjerven in Lardal. The reason to believe this is that Sigmunds posterity are still at Skjerven.
