ASTRUP, Hans Jorgen Synnestvedt, CNM South Africa, born in Grue in Solor on 30-08-1852, son of Judge Nicolai Astrup and Hanna, b. Døderlein. He finished his student's exams in Norway at the Trondhjem Cathedral school in 1870. He did his next exam at the University in Christiania in 1871; his theological university degree in 1876. He was personnel curate in Southern Aurdal in 1878; was pastor in Jevnaker, later in Sondre Land and in Oyer. In 1884, he was sent out to work at Entumeni mission station and was the inspector from 1910 - 1923. He was pensioned in 1923. He wrote the book "Darkness - became Light". He was awarded St Olav's Order of first class. He first married Margrethe Wilhelmine Aabel in 1881. She died in 1882. He then married Thekla Breder in 1887 [in Zululand]. She died in 1920. He then married Anna Sofia Stenberg in 1924. He died in 1939. Hans Astrup, who had been curate in Sondreland, arrived in South Africa and took over the work at Schreuder's other mission station at Entumeni in 1884. (Some documents record his birth as August 30, others 31st.)
