Elihu Atha was born in 1844 at Fairview, Pocahontas County, West Virginia, the son of Thomas Alfred Atha, Sr. (1810–1873) and Nancy Ann Sutton (1812–1869).
At age 18 in 1862 Elihu joined the West Virginia Infantry, Company H, 14th Regiment, Union Army during the Civil War.[1][2][3] He attained the final rank of Corporal.[4] Elihu was wounded and lost his leg in the Civil War but went on to become a successful businessman who owned several homes in Lore City. He built one between 1900 and 1910 and it is a preserved historic home (see attached article).
Elihu married first Frances V. Burgoyne (1845–1899) on 11 October 1866 in Marion County, West Virginia.[5][6][7]

Maggie A. Atha (1872–1895)
Elihu married second Mary Jane (Tuttle) Foster (1853–1931) in 1899 at Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia. The had no issue. Mary Jane had married first to Lewis Winfield Foster (1853–1931).
Elihu, 87 year old widowed farmer, passed away in 1931 in Lore City, Guernsey County, Ohio.[8][9] Elihu was buried in Senecaville Cemetery in Senecaville, Guernsey County, Ohio.[10]
Death Notice
Elihu Atha, 87, father of W. Hunter Atha of this city, died Wednesday evening at his home in Lore City. He was a veteran of the Civil War. Two children survive.[11]
