John Atkinson was born in Lincolnshire, England.

John Atkinson gent bac otp married Miss Mary Brightman otp by lic at Spalding 26 Nov 1776, witnessed by John Thistleton, Susanna Atkinson, Lydia Knipe Grundy, Mary Molson and TG Thistleton. Mary Brightman baptised 9 Feb 1754 at Spalding, da of Thomas Brightman and Elizabeth Grundy. Mary Brightman married first to John Atkinson about 1771, but was widowed by 1797, and as a widow occupied premises in High street Spalding in 1797. In 1786 John Atkinson was an attorney in Spalding. [Samford Mercury, 16 Feb 1787] John Atkinson was buried 24 Jan 1788 at Spalding. John Atkinson, late of Spalding gent deceased left admin to his wife Mary. [Stamford Mercury, 11 April 1788] Issue: Harriet 1783, John 1778, William 1781, and Thomas 1786. Death at Barrow-upon-Soar, Leics, of Susannah relict of the Rev William Easton, late vicar of that place, surviving daughter of the Rev R Atkinson, formerly of Lincoln, sister of John Atkinson Esq formerly of Spalding, and aunt of Mr Atkinson, solicitor Peterborough, in 11 March 1832 aged 75.
