George W. Austin
AUSTIN, George W. - Age 78, a resident of Roseburg passed away January 16, 1998 at a Portland hospital. He was born September 16, 1919 in Columbiana, Alabama, one of 13 children born to sharecropper William and Ludy (Thornton) Austin. George joined the Civilian Conservation Corps at the age of 13 where he worked in a rock quarry. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for eight years during World War II. George was united in marriage to his wife Elsie Copenhaver on December 4, 1949. They moved to Roseburg in 1966. George went to work for Pacific Power and Light in 1952 and retired in 1978. He was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses on July 14, 1979 and maintained his faith in God and his promises until death. George will be remembered for his expressions of love and generosity and his special smile. He loved hunting, fishing on the Oregon Coast and spending time with his family. George enjoyed life to it's fullness. Survivors include his wife Elsie; children, Larry Copenhaver and wife Sally, Wesley Copenhaver and wife Judy, Kathy Hunt and husband Don, Mike Austin and wife Cindy; sister, Katie Davis; brothers Adam, Dick, Fred and Roland; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters, Rex, Irene, Evelyn, Gertrude, Ellis, Jack and James. Memorial services will be held Saturday, January 24, 1998 at 2 p.m. at the Roseburg Kingdom Hall, 1183 W. Lookingglass Road.
