Milwaukee Man Is Burned To Death In Truck Accident
Port Washington - (Special) - A Milwaukee gasoline transport truck driver was fatally burned in an accident Saturday afternoon at the "cloverleaf" intersection four miles south of Port Washington.
The driver, Michael C. Axtman, 28, of 2324A N. Twenty-first street, Milwaukee, was hurled from the cab after the truck struck a concrete pillar of the underpass and exploded. The impact tore the trailer loose and threw it in front of the cab where it exploded.
Axtman's body was found in a water-filled ditch almost 140 feet from the crash.
Police officers who investigated believed that Axtman jumped from the burning cab into the ditch to souse the flames that burned away most of his clothing. Dr. C. C. Stein, Ozaukee county coroner, said that burns to Axtman's face and body caused his death.
Axtman was a veteran of World War II. He had served in the U. S. Navy.
The survivors include his wife Elsie; three children, Judy, 8, Robert, 6, and Jeannie, 4; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pius Axtman, and four brothers, Martin, a Seabee at Port Hueneme, Calif., Robert, Virgil and James of Milwaukee.
The accident victim was a driver for the Quality Milk Co. of Burlington, Wis.
