Oliver was born in England May 16, 1862.[1]
By the age of 8, he was a student at St. Luke's in Chelsea. His father had died and he was in care of the Chelsea Poor Law Union. The Union paid Maria Rye, a caretaker of poor and orphaned children, £12.23 to settle Oliver in a new home in Canada. Miss Rye left England with a party of boys on July 16 bound for Halifax aboard the ship "Caspian". Many were initially settled at homes in New Brunswick, including Oliver.[1]
He was described in documents as "one of the finest looking of the whole lot, having a very good education indeed."[1]
In an 1878 report listing children who had not been visited by Dominion government agents, he was aged 16 and living in Saint John, New Brunswick with Alfred Lardely and was working in Lardely's spice store while also attending school. Mr. Lardley was a manfacturer of spices and married to the former Maria Dodge only a few years earlier. Oliver had adopted the name LORDELY by 1881. Author's Note : In many cases of Home Children I have reviewed, taking the surname of their guardian is highly uncommon and this indicates to me a high degree of rapport and integration between Oliver and his adopted New Brunswick family.)[1]
He married Emma Doherty on Feb 4, 1885 in Saint John. She was a daughter of John Doherty of Pleasant Point.[2] They lived at Lancaster (later part of Saint John) and raised a family. He also continued working in the spice factory.
His adopted mother died in 1901 and his adopted father Alfred died in 1902.
After 1902, other than marriage records for the children, no additional records have been found for Oliver.
A possible birth registration, right details but the following year: Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1863 in the Westminster district, London, Enlgand.[3]
