Josiah Babcock was born Aug 30, 1773 in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, son of Nathan and Jerusha. [1] [Find A Grave says he was born in Bolton but this is an error. ]
Elizabeth Wheeler, (daughter of Jonathan and Mary) and Josiah Badcock married in Bolton, Massachusetts on January 2, 1800. [2]
Josiah established a tannery on the south side of Bolton on the Old Marlborough Road on the east branch of Wataquadock Brook in 1802 , a few rods west of the Garrison house. He bought 12 1/4 acres of land from Levi and Betsey Moore in 1802 along with 1/2 the house on that land. In the deed at that time there was no tan yard mentioned. [3]
In 1806, he purchased a partly finished currying shop from Ebenezer Bridge of Harvard with "the privilege of removing the same or improving upon it where it now stands." Josiah moved it to his own land and used it as a tan house for many years . [3]
He passed away in 1851 in Bolton, Massachusetts [4] and is buried in Bolton. [5]
