Biography

Robert Bacon was the third-born son and first surviving son of Sir Robert Bacon, 3rd Baronet Bacon of Redgrave, and his first wife Anne Peyton. He was baptised in 1602 at Iselham, Cambridgeshire, the home of his mother.[1]

Marriage and Children

On 31 December 1627, at his father's seat of Great Ryburgh Norfolk, he married Catherine Violet, daughter of Grave Violet, Esq., of Pynkney House, Taterford, Norfolk, near King's Lynn. [2]

The marriage produced one son, Edmund, his heir and the heir to his father's baronetcy. He was born about 1634, m. before 1650 Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Robert Crane; d. September 1685 with no living male issue.[3] [4]

There were also four daughters, of whose births only Anne's seems to have been recorded. [5] [4]

Anne - bp 11 August 1632 at Great Ryburgh; [6] m. Charles Yaxley; d. after 1657
Jemima - b. after 1632; m. (1) 1666 Francis Gardiner (2) Sir John Battle; d. January 1719/20
Philippa - b. c. 1632; m. 22 October 1649 at Thornage George Reeve;[7] [8] d. c. 1658
Frances - b. c. 1632; m. after 1650 Paul Bockenham; d. after 1657.

Succession

Robert Bacon, who styled himself "of Redgrave", resided primarily at Thornage Norfolk, a property once granted by King Henry VIII to Sir William Butts, the king's physician and ancestor of the Bacons, to whom it passed. [9] The baptisms of many Bacons were recorded there, but not of Robert Bacon's children.

Robert Bacon pre-deceased his father, dying 15 August 1652, and thus did not inherit. His only son, Edmund Bacon, suceeded to his grandfather's baronetcy and estate. He and his wife Catherine were both buried at Redgrave Suffolk where there is a monument: she in 7 January 1657/8[4]
