Biography

Stefan Rafał Badeni was a Polish patriot, historian, writer, and the last owner of the estates of Koropiec on the Dniester and Zaburze near Tarnopol and Znosicze in Polesie.

He was the son of the national marshal of Galicia, Stanisław Badeni, and Cecylia, née Mier, and brother of Henryk Badeni, nephew of the Prime Minister of Austria-Hungary Casimir Badeni, and cousin of diplomat Ludwik Badeni. He was educated in Vienna and Munich. He inherited the palace in Koropiec and significant estates from his father, which he managed efficiently. He was involved in social work, establishing orphanages and schools, building chapels and educating the most talented rural children at his own expense. In 1917, he married Maria Jabłonowska (1891 - 1941). The wedding took place in Zakopane.

After the Soviets entered in September 1939, he went with his family to Budapest, where he helped Polish refugees and worked in the underground. In 1941 his wife died. His son, Jan (1921 - 1995), joined the Polish Armed Forces, fighting as a soldier in the Independent Carpathian Brigade, and then as a pilot in the Polish Air Force in Great Britain and the RAF. In 1944, Stefan Badeni was arrested by the Gestapo and sent to the Mauthausen concentration camp, where he was imprisoned until liberation by the Americans. After the war, he remained in exile because his assets ended up in the USSR. Initially he lived in France, and from 1947 in Ireland.

He had great talent and historical knowledge and wrote a book titled "The World Before Yesterday", which was a collection of texts about 19th-century Europe. The subject of his memories and columns was the history of Poland and Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries.

He was buried in St. Brigides Cemetery in Dublin.
