Biography

William Bagot was a son of Richard Bagot, Knight, and Christian, surname unknown.[1][2][3]

His year of birth is unknown and is estimated as c 1250.

Marriage and Children

He married Hawise, surname unknown.[1][2][3][4]

Children:

A deed of 20 E. I. (1292), by which Sibil, the daughter of Sir William Bagod of Bromley Bagod, quits claim to John Bagod, her brother, all her right in lands and tenements which her brother, William Bagod, held by gift of his father in Bromley Bagod, witnessed by Ralph de Montjoie, Alured de Soleney, and others.[3]

Career

56 Henry III [1271-1272]: "Of Valets, they say that Geoffrey de Gresele, Thomas de Haleton, Hugh de Weston, William de Mere, William Bagot of Bromlegh, and Thomas Meverel of Gayton, hold entire Knight's fee, and are of full age, and are not yet Knights. They are therefore in misericordid. Likewise Nicholas. Baron of Stafford."[5]

03 Dec 1272: Order to the barons of the Exchequer to cause enrolment to be made pursuant to the king's grant to William Bagot that of his debts he pay 20 l. a year.[6]

1276: William, son of Roger de Tunstall, sued William Bagot and and Christiana, the widow of Richard Bagot, together with fifteen other tenants in Bromley Bagot, for unjustly disseising him of his common of pasture in Bromley Bagot.[3]

Death

According to Wrottesley[3] he was living in September 1290 but had died by November 1290 when William de Tarpele (Tappeley) sued John Bagot of Brumley Bagot for distraining him to perform suit at his Court of Brumley Bagot, against the form of feoffment.

Earlier texts had claimed he died in 1296.[1][2]

His wife Hawise survived him.[3][7] and she was still living in 1307:[4]

Indenture of 21 E. I. (1293), between Hawyse, the relict of Sir William Bagod of Bromley Bagod, and John, her son, relative to a dispute between them respecting sales of wood in Brumley.[3]

She was still living in 1307:[4]

Trinity, 35 Edward I [1307]: The Sheriff was ordered to produce Hawise formerly wife of William Bagot to acknowledge what right she claimed in the third part of the manor of Bronly Bagot which John Bagot had conceded in Court to John de Mountjoye by a fine levied between them …
