Biography

Bartus was born on September 19, 1704.[1] He is the son of Dirck Hanrics Baijens and Arnolda Uwen Clingh.[2] In the baptism record it is states "Norbertus son of Theodorus Baijens and Aertje Theodori". With as witnesses Gerardus Henrici Baijens and Gurt Wilhelmi.[3] Some may say that we would not be sure if Norbertus indeed is a son of Dirck Hanrick Baijens and Arnolda Uwen Clingh. As the birth record shows the fathers name is "Theodorus" and the mothers name here is "Aertje Theodori." Theodorus is the latin name for Dirck and as you continue to read, you see Norbertus attending the baptisms of his nieces and nephews and then family connection becomes very clear.

When Bartus is 21 years old on September 16, 1725, he attends the baptism of his niece Joanna van Rosmael. She was the daughter of Bartus sister Wilhelma Dirckx Baijens and Josephus van Rosmael. Bartus is listed in the baptism document as "Norbertus Dirickx Baijens"[4]

Two days later on September 18, 1725 we find Bartus again as "Nortbertus Drickx Baijens" as a witness at the baptism of his cousin. His mothers sister Waltera Uwen Clingh and Joannes Baltis Baijens had a son named Theodorus. Joannes Baltis Baijens is a far cousin, the son of Baltus Willem Baijens. [5]

The next time we find him on December 13, 1733 at the wedding of his sister Catharina Dirickx Baijens who married Petrus Joannis Hendrickx van Berchem. Norbertus is listed with his sister as a witness: Norbertus Dirickx Baijens, Joanna Dirickx Baijens.[6]

On January 10, 1734 he marries Antonia van Esch in Macharen. The marriage record lists "Groom Bartholomeus Baeijens born in Lithoijen. Bride Antonia Wilhelmi van Esch"[7]

Antonia is sometimes referrered to as "Antonia van Macharen". They stay in Macharen for several years. Four of their children were born there. In Macharen Norbertus is many times called "Bartholomeus". The children born in Macharen are:

  1. Wilhelmus or Willem Bartus Baijens was born on November 24, 1734. Willem marries Theodora Mil. Willem is referred to as "Willem Bartus Baijens" in his engagement record in 1768.[8] "Wilhelmus Norberti Baijens" when his son Norbertus is born in 1769[9] and "Wilhelmus Bartholomaei Baijens" when his daughter Maria is born in 1771.[10] We know for sure this represent the same Willem Baijens as his wife Theodora Mil is also listed in each of these records.
  2. Arnolda, was born on June 21, 1736 and passed away 9 days later on June 30, 1736.
  3. Hermanus Baijens was born on August 6, 1737. In his birth record his father is called Bartholomaeus Baijens and mother Antonia with witness Maria van Esch. He married Anna Maria Clingh.
  4. Anna Maria was born on February 19, 1740. Parents listed are Bartholomeus Baijens and Antonia. She married in 1785 Adrianus de Haas.

Between 1740 and 1744 Bartholomeus and Antonia move to his birthplace Lithoijen. In Lithoijen he uses the name Norbertus again. Two children were born in Lithoijen:

  1. Theodorus Baijens was born on August 20, 1744. Parents listed are Norbertus Baijens and Antonia van Machere.
  2. Andreas Baijens was born on May 30, 1748. Parents listed are Norbertus Baijens and Antonia van Machere. Andreas passed away on November 28, 1748.[11]

On August 23, 1748 his brothers and sister are settling their inheritance after their father Dirck Hanrick Baijens passes away.[12][13] In the records he is listed with his brothers and sisters as follows:

  • Maria Derrik Baijens widow of Wouter Boxtel
  • Iwen Derrik Baijens
  • Hendrien Derik Baijens married to Jan Loeff
  • Bartus Baijens. The transcript states "Baltus Baijens", however when you look at the orginal it clearly shows "Bartus"
  • Jantje (Joanna) Baijens married to Jan Schoffelaars
  • Willemke Derrik Baijens married to Joseph van Roosmaelen, who both had passed away and the inheritance went to their children Johanna, Derrik and Hendrik

On August 14, 1748 they sell some of the inheritance: Furniture, Linnen, Copper, Wood and Oats (Haver). On August 23, 1748 they sell a house, orchard in Lithoijen on the "Langeweijen." They also list three pieces of "Teuland." One in the "Naeste Langbreemt" and one in the "Cleijnen Eng" and one in the "Heilige Geest Camp." Joost van Deest buys the house for f 210,=

On December 1, 1748 Bartus is a witness at the baptism of his nephew Thomas Schoeffelaarts. Thomas was the son of Bartus sister Joanna (Jantje) Baijens and Joannes Schoeffelaarts. Bartus is listed as "Norbertus Baijens"[14]

On February 13, 1752 Bartus and Antonia are both a witnesses at the baptism of his niece Maria Anna Schoeffelaarts. Maria Anna was also the daughter of Bartus sister Joanna (Jantje) Baijens and Joannes Schoeffelaarts. They are listed as "Norbertus Baijens and Antonia spouse of Norbertus"'[15]

On December 12, of 1760 it states in the Lithoijese records that "Bartus Baijens" passed away.[16] On March 2, 1776 Antonia passes away. It states: "Teuntje widow of Bartus Baijens".[17]
