Biography

Gertrude was born in 1919. She passed away in 2010.[1]

TWENTY - FIRST BIRTHDAY. A coming of age party was tendered Miss Gertie Bailey at Mrs T. Haynes home on Saturday, January 20. Those responsible for the arrangements were Mrs Haynes and Mrs D. V. Ward (Crystal Brook, eldest sister of Miss Bailey). About 50 to 60 people were present, some coming from Adelaide, Snowtown, Crystal Brook, Whyalla, Tippera West, Wallaroo, etc. Games, competition and community singing contributed to the evening's enjoyment. The birthday cake, which was presented by Mr and Mrs T. Haynes, with whom Miss Bailey has been living for several years, was lighted, cut, and distributed to the guests. Mr W H. B. Haynes presented Miss Gertie with the usual keys (a brooch, and a larger one for all present to auto graph) and said how Gertie was a daughter and sister to the whole family. Mr George Bailey responded for his sister, and thanked all who were responsible for the successful evening. A home-made supper was served, after which the folk joined in the singing of "Auld Lang Syne." Miss Bailey, who received many presents, returned to Crystal Brook on Sunday, where she will stay for a few weeks.[2]

HAYNES—BAILEY. The wedding of Miss Gertrude Bailey, youngest daughter, of Mr and late Mrs E. Bailey, of Crystal Brook, and Mr Ray D. Haynes, youngest son of Mr and Mrs T. Haynes, Matta Flat, Kadina, was solemnised at the Wallaroo Mines Methodist church on Easter Saturday, March 23, by Rev. O. Noske and Rev. A. E. Jones, officiating con-jointly. The church was decorated with flowers. Miss Gertrude Bailey entered the church on the arm of her father and wore an ivory brocaded satin frock with a tight fitting bodice finished with a Duke of York collar. The very full skirt extended into a long train. The bride wore a tulle veil, which was loaned by Mrs Gordon James, of Adelaide, and carried a sheaf of white flowers. The bridesmaids, Miss P. Bailey (sister of the bride)and Miss E. Martin (both of Crystal Brook) were frocked alike in lavender, with rucked tops and full sweeping skirts. They carried pale green muffs, decorated with lavender flowers and wore a spray of lavender in their hair. The flower girls, Carlene Bailey and Barbara Bailey, nieces of the bride, were dressed in pale green, and carried pale green muffs, with lavender flowers. The bridegroom's brothers, Messrs W. H. B. Haynes and A. D. Haynes acted as best man and groomsman. During the signing of the register Mrs A. E. Jones and Mrs Gordon Tamblyn rendered solos, with Mrs J. Besanko at the organ. The wedding breakfast was held in the social hall adjoining the church, where about 80 relatives and friends were entertained. The two-tier wedding cake was the gift of the bride's sister, Mrs Donald Ward, of Crystal Brook. The bride's travelling frock was black-berry and she wore, accessories to match. The Rev. O. L. Noske, on be-half of the Jerusalem Christian Endeavor presented the young married couple with a pocket Bible. Both have been very active workers at Jerusalem, in church work. Mr and Mrs Haynes are spending their honeymoon at Moonta Bay. Mr Haynes has just passed his examination as a Methodist Missionary, and has been appointed to Kimba, where he and Mrs Haynes will take up their residence at the beginning of April.[3]
