Biography

Jonathan was born in 1769. He was the son of William Balch and Rebecca Bailey.

Jonathan was married three times. On 13 Aug. 1796, he married for the first time with Abigail Carlton, daughter of Deacon Phineas and Susan (Stickney) Carlton of Bradford.[1][2] Secondly, on 29 Nov. 1803, he married Abigail's sister, Mehitable.[3][4] Finally, on 3 Apr. 1832, he married his third wife Mrs. Betsey (Clay) Danforth [widow of Eliphalet].[5][6]

Children

Jonathan had eight children, three by first wife Abigail and five by Mehitable:

  1. Phineas Carlton Balch (1797-1880)
  2. Leonard Balch (1799-1871)
  3. William Balch (1802-1841)
  4. Uriah Balch (1805-1832)
  5. Thomas Hutchinson Balch (1807-1902)
  6. Jonathan Balch (1808-1892)
  7. Bailey Balch (1811-d.y.) - twin
  8. Abigail Balch (1811-d.y.) - twin.

Jonathan was recorded in Bradford on the 1810[7] and 1820[8] censuses.

Jonathan passed away in Bradford in 1838, on the place once occupied by his uncle Nathaniel.[9][10] He and all three wives were buried in East Bradford, MA, in what is now known as Riverview Cemetery, on Groveland, MA.[11]
