Biography

John Ball was the son of William Ball and Margaret Moody, of Berkshire, England.[1][2]

He is named as John Paris Ball in many family trees, however no identified sources use this middle name, and a compound name would be unusual in this time and place. He identifies himself as "John ball of wokingham" in his will.[3]

William died in 1550 and was succeeded by John Ball his son.[1][2]

Regarding his family:

Walne indicates that John married Agnes, daughter of Richard Holloway of Barkham, who died without issue. And he then married Alice Haynes of Finchampstead, who bore him four sons and three daughters.[1]
The Visitation of London indicates that John married Agnes, daughter of Richard Holloway Esq. of Barkham, by whom he had four children - John, Robert, Thomas & Rachel. He also married Alice Haynes of Fincham[p]sted, by whom he had four children, William, Richard, Elizabeth & Joane.[2] The Visitation does not identify the order of marriage, although it might be inferred that he married Alice first.

The current profile and children have estimated dates that align with first marriage to Agnes and second to Alice. But his will indicates that Agnes was his second wife. This correction would affect these estimated dates.

John died in 1599, and was buried in the churchyard at Wokingham, Berkshire, England.[1][2]

The will of John Ball was dated 11 April 1591 and probated 7 Sept 1599 in Wiltshire.[3] A transcription of the will identifies his wife as Agnes, indicating she was his second wife. It names daughters Joane and Rachel (not married), and sons William, Robert, Thomas and John. However it does not leave any estate to William, with most of the estate going to his wife Agnes and son John.[4] It is possible that he had already made property available to son William from Alice, and so only needed to address the eldest son of his second wife.

Research Notes

Some family trees suggest he also married Mary Pace, but no source is identified for this. She is not listed in the 1634 visitation, which was after John had died so should have been in the records.

Some family trees draw their information on John Ball from (Ancestry) Millenium Files, (Ancestry) US and International Marriage Records, (Ancestry) American Genealogical-Biographical Index and/or Netherlands, GenealogieOnline Trees Index. However those are at best secondary sources and not necessarily reliable.

Ball-4183 and Ball-325 appear to represent the same person because: Same name (middle name Paris is speculative), same birth time and place (exact year is not known, so 1525/1529 are all similar guesses), both married Alice Haynes/Hayes, both died in 1599 in Berkshire. These are duplicate profiles for same person and should be merged. Wokingham more likely as that was the family estate. Sources and bio are provided in Ball-325.
