Biography

  • Jeremiah Barker was born on the 5th of February 1814 to Isaac Barker and Mary Cox in Wayne County, Indiana Territory.[1][2][3][4]
  • On the 5th of May 1833 Jeremiah married Jane Kerlin in Wayne County, Indiana.[3][5]
  • Jane and Jeremiah's first daughter, Martha, was born in 1834 in Indiana.[2][3][4]
  • Jane and Jeremiah's first son, Benjamin, was born in 1835 in Indiana.[2][3]
  • Jane and Jeremiah's second son, Elijah Isles, was born in 1838 in Indiana.[2][3][4]
  • Jane and Jeremiah's second daughter, Sarah, was born in 1839 in Indiana.[2][3][4]
  • The 1840 U. S. census finds Jeremiah living with his wife and their three children in Morgan County, Indiana.[2]
  • Jane and Jeremiah's third son, Isaac, was born in 1841 in Indiana.[3][4]
  • Jane and Jeremiah's third daughter, Mary, was born in 1843 in Indiana.[3][4]
  • Jane and Jeremiah's fourth son, William Kendrick, was born in 1845 in Indiana.[3][4]
  • Jane and Jeremiah's fourth daughter, Katherine, was born in 1847 in Indiana.[3][4]
  • Jane and Jeremiah's fifth daughter, Melinda, was born in 1849 in Indiana.[3][4]
  • The 1850 U. S. census finds Jeremiah living with his wife, Jane Barker, and eight children on a farm in Boone County, Indiana.[3]
  • Jane and Jeremiah's sixth daughter, Margaret, was born in 1851 in Indiana.[3][4]
  • On the 1st of November 1851, Jeremiah Barker made two requests to the men's meeting of the Sugar Plain Monthly Meeting: First he requested to be reinstated into membership with the Friends, and second, he requested that he, his wife (Jane), and their minor children (Benjamin, Elijah, Sarah, Isaac, Mary, William K., Catherine, Malinda, Jane and Margery) be joined in membership with the Friends.[6] At the same time his wife requested, in the women's meeting, that she (Jane) and her minor daughters (Sarah, Mary, Catherine, Malinda, Jane and Margery) be joined into membership with the Friends.[7]
    • Jeremiah's first request,[6] that is, that he be reinstated to membership with the Friends, stems from his disownment by the Chester Monthly Meeting in Wayne County. While the minutes concerning Jeremiah's disownment appear to have been lost, it is easy to discern the reason for his disownment: On the 5th of May 1833 he married Jane Kerlin out of unity.[5]
    • In typical fashion, the men's and women's meetings formed a joint committee to visit with the Barker family to discern the level of seriousness behind their requests. The following month on the 6th of December 1851 the committee reported back to the men's meeting that they were in unity with granting Jeremiah's first request. After discussion, the men's meeting instructed the Clerk to write to the Chester Monthly meeting asking their approbation in the matter.[8]
    • The committee reported to the women's meeting on the 3th of December 1851 that they had had a meeting with Jane Barker and her family and that they were of the opinion that accepting her and her daughter's into the Friends was the proper thing to do.[9] The men's meeting upon being informed on the 6th of December 1851, concurred and a committee was formed to welcome Jane and her minor children to the Friends.[8]
    • On the 3rd of January 1852 the committee formed to welcome Jane and her children to the Friends reported that they had accomplished their task.[10]
    • On the 22nd of January 1852, the Chester Monthly Meeting received the letter from the Sugar Plain Monthly Meeting concerning Jeremiah's request to be reunited with the Friends. The letter informed that the Sugar Plain Monthly Meeting was ready to grant Jeremiah's request subject to their approbation. The Chester Monthly Meeting gives them approbation to proceed as they see fit. The Clerk is instructed to inform the Sugar Plain Monthly Meeting of this decision.[11]
    • On the 6th of March 1852 the Sugar Creek Monthly meeting received a communication from the Chester Monthly Meeting giving their approbation for Sugar Creek Monthly Meeting to reinstated Jeremiah's membership in the Friends. The men's meeting formed a committee to inform Jeremiah of his reinstatement.[12]
    • On the 3rd of April 1862, the men's committee was informed that Jeremiah barker had been informed of his reinstatement in the Friends.[13]
  • Jane and Jeremiah's fifth son, Jeremiah, was born in 1853 in Indiana.[3][4][14]
  • Jane and Jeremiah's sixth son, Amos, was born in 1854 in Indiana.[3][4][14]
  • Jane and Jeremiah's seventh son, John, was born in 1857 in Indiana.[3][4] [14]
  • Jeremiah died on the 31st of January 1858 in Cresco, Howard county, Iowa.[15]
