Biography

cf. mainly family archives supplemented with Wien cemetery databank (www.friedhoefewien.at) and complemented by http://genealogy.euweb.cz.

SAROLTA CAROLINA JOHANNA SZTANKOVITS-BARKÓCZY BARONIN ("Lola"'s mother) was born about 1851 to Ferenc Franz BARKÓCZY Baron and Eugénia BARKÓCZY [née RICHTER].

Sarolta died on 21 September 1925, aged about 74, in Wien. She was buried on 24 September 1925 in Wien, Gersthofer Friedhof: 2-2-8.

The following information is also recorded for Sarolta. Marriage to József SZTANKOVICS ...

Notes: • With admiration & appreciation to Miroslav Marek for publishing - and János József Gudenus for compiling - the Barkóczy de Szala et Tavarna genealogical tree on: http://genealogy.euweb.cz.

And also thanks to András for his scholarly input into the Hungarian "name game" and ... It's high time I awarded a special thank you to the heavenly Heidelbergers, Uli & Ruth, - the Sütterlin & Co. specialist "cousins" - for their always willing, knowledgeable - simply indispensable! - help deciphering tricky bits of old documents!

• N.B. Name at birth was "Sarolta" (cf, citation). According to my kind & helpful Hungarian specialist "Sarolt" was the name of the wife of the first Hungarian ruler, Gèza. It is of Turkish origin (Sar-oldu) and means "white weasel". Similarities can be made with the French name of "Charlotte" . Source 2 applies (Name). • N.B. On the basis of my own research on the internet it would appear that Hungarian ladies bearing the name of "Sarolta" would tend to choose - in particular circumstances - to Germanify their name by changing it to "Caroline" or "Carolina". This observation is further reinforced by notes on comparisons of names in various languages as in the attached citation - the German equivalent of the Hungarian name "Sarolta" is given as: "Charlotte","Karla", "Karoline" etc. . Source 2 applies. (Name).

• CONCLUSION: What is clear is that: - Lola's mother's name at birth was "Sarolta". - At some point she started using the name "Carolina" as given on both Lola's birth & christening and later her marriage certificate. - Upon her death she resumed her original name of "Sarolta" and was buried under that name (cf. cited link and relevant photo of gravestone) . Source 2 applies. (Name). • N.B. Under her original name-at-birth of "Sarolta" and confirming her own status as "Baronin" yet also showing her additional married name as "von SZTANKOVICH" (misspelled in Wien cemetery data?) - cf. photo detail of grave inscription (Burial). • to József SZTANKOVICH (Marriage).

• N.B. What is not clear is whether "Sarolta's/Carolina's" ascribed husband, József SZTANKOVICH was indeed the father of her daughter Lola ... Quite to the contrary it would appear from the fact that this gentleman's name is NOT AT ALL MENTIONED on any documents pertaining to Lola (either birth & christening certificate or e.g. marriage certificate) as if either: - Lola was illegitimate (born either before or after marriage between her parents?) - Lola's mother had separated subsequently from her husband and simply did not wish him to be listed as father ...? (Marriage).

• Following on from the first note: while Lola's actual natural father IS NOT INDICATED on any documents of hers available at this time, at least, HER GRANDFATHER'S NAME - Baron Ferenc/Franz BARKOCZY - IS GIVEN on Lola's birth & christening certificate. This detail, together with Lola's recorded change of name from BARKOCZY to SZTANKOVITS on 14th. May 1914 would seem to support the possible premise that she was born OUT OF WEDLOCK ... (Marriage).

• N.B. On the 14th. Feb. 1928 version of Lola's original 29th. Sept. 1894 birth & christening certificate the name of her godmother is given as "Edith SZTANKOVITS" ("Postdirektor's" daughter) - also resident at the same address as provided for Lola's place of birth i.e. Wien VII, Kaunitzgasse 6B. Presumably this person was related to Sarolta/Carolina's ascribed husband József SZTANKOVICH - maybe a sister of his ...??? Unfortunately, no further records on this individual can be traced at present (Marriage).

Citation: Source 2, page http://genealogy.euweb.cz/hung/barkoczy.html (Marriage).

Sarolta gave birth to one daughter: "Lola" Maria Leonie WENGRAF [SZTANKOVITS-BARKOCZY] in 1894
