Clara was born in 1863[1] in Thorne, Yorkshire, England. In 1871 she lived in Rawmarsh, Yorkshire, with her parents, Stephen Barley and Eliza Mortimer.[2] They had returned to Thorne by 1881.[3]
In 1883 Clara married Fred Anelay in Thorne.[4][5] The family lived in Eastrington in 1891, where Fred worked as a railway porter.[6] By 1901 they had moved to Thorne. Fred worked as a signalman.[7][8]
