Biography

Samuel was born about 1826 in Bulmer, Essex.[1]

Samuel, his wife Susan, daughter Agnes and son Abraham emigrated to New Zealand in 1855 aboard the 'Grasmere'. The ship left London in January arriving at Lyttelton on 4 May 1855.[2]

Samuel and Susan had children:

  1. Agnes (Barrell) Bailey (bef.1851-1912)
  2. Abraham Barrell (abt.1851-1938)
  3. Mark Barrell (1857-1939)
  4. Edith Emily Barrell (1861-1873)
  5. Alice Agnes (Barrell) Todd (1863-1938)
  6. Charles Amos Barrell (1865-1873)
  7. Mina Lucy Barrell (1867-1873)
DIPTHERIA - This disease has been very prevalent in the vicinity of Rangiora during the past few weeks. It has, in nearly every instance, attacked children and its ravages have proved fatal in several instances. A farmer named Barrell, residing near the Woodend road, has lost three of his children from the above cause during a very short space of time and it is exceedingly fortunate that the disease has not as yet show itself in the populous part of Rangiora[3].

He passed away in 1911[4] and is buried in the Mangatainoka Cemetery. [5]

The death occurred at Mangatainoka on Thursday evening of a very old colonist in the person of Mr Samuel Barrell, at the advanced age of 85 years. The deceased gentleman, who was highly respected by all who knew him, was one of the original Canterbury pilgrims, having arrived in Lyttelton over 56 years ago, in the Grassmere, the first emigrant ship[6]. For the past eleven or twelve years the late Mr Barrell, whose wife pre-deceased him six years ago, has been living with his son Mr A Barrell of Mangatainoka[7]
