Biography

William Barrett was a Freemason.

William was born in 1781.

He was an excise officer in Newry, and then transferred to Cork, where, on 10 October 1813, he married Sarah Freke, only daughter of James Freke, of Baltimore, County Cork. ^[1]

He subsequently returned to Newry, where in 1824-5, he is referred to as Surveyor of Excise, and, 1826-30, as Supervisor of Excise in the Armagh Excise Department.

He was a Freemason and was initiated on 18 May 1810, in Lodge No. 23, Newry, and was affiliated, 7 November 1810, to XVIIL, the membership of which he resigned, 1 April 1812. ^[2]

Children

1. Mary Jane married Rev Richard Townsend in 1852.
2. Helena married Rev George Samuel Greer in 1846.
3. Jane died unmarried 1858.
4. Sarah died unmarried 9 June 1903

He died in 1858.

Jan. 15, at Rathmines-road, the residence of his son-in-law, the Rev. Richard Townsend, F.T.C.D., William S. Barrett, Esq , aged 77 years.

In Affectionate Remembrance of MARY JANE the fondly and devoted wife of the Reverend RICHARD TOWNSEND Fellow of Trinity College Dublin who died 28th August 1881. Of her father WILLIAM BARRETT who died 15th Jany. 1858 of her mother SARAH BARRETT who died 10th June 1857 and of her sister JANE BARRETT who died 30th June 1858 "As in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive".
