Biography

Matthew Barrie was born in Scotland.

Matthew Barrie was born in Muiravonside on 12 July 1859 and was the eldest son of William Barrie and Susan Campbell Wilson.^[1]

Matthew married Helen Strang in the village of Camelon on 4 July 1879 and they had five children.^[2]

On the 1881 census, Matthew, a blacksmith, and Helen are living on Main St, Falkirk, with their two eldest children: William (1 year) and Annie (3 months). Three more children would before one the next few years, however Helen would die in 1888.^[3]

Matthew married Annie McGaskill in the Gorbals on 27 September 1889, however the marriage only lasted five months as Annie died on 22 February 1890.^[4]

On the 1891 census, Matthew, a blacksmith, is living with his parents and brother at Burnside, Falkirk. Matthew has been widowed twice by the age of 31 years and has four children living with them.^[5] On the 1901 census, Matthew is still living with his parents Burnside, Falkirk, but only one of his children, Helen, known as Nellie, is still living with them.^[6]

Matthew married Janet Strachan Ronald in the parish of Falkirk on 28 June 1901. Mathew is described as a journeyman (salesman) and Jessie is a domestic servant. Janet, known as Jessie, had never been married before but she had two illegitimate children from previous relationships.^[7]

After Jessie's death, Matthew married Jane Brock, a widow, in the parish of Blythswood, Glasgow, on 2 July 1913. Matthew is blacksmith and Jane is a charwoman. ^[8]

Matthew Barrie died, aged 70 years, on 7 September 1929.^[9]
