Eugene Barrios was born in Louisiana on May 31, 1925, the son of Francis Barrios and Grace Rood. He married Ramona Vincent on June 2, 1951. During their marriage, they had five sons and a daughter. Around 1959, Gene was left paralyzed by polio, so he had to rely on an iron lung and a rocking bed to keep himself alive.
When Hurricane Betsy hit Louisiana in September 1965, Gene had to be transported to Charity Hospital by his brothers-in-law, including Henry, while the rest of his family went to the Gentilly section of New Orleans. While Gene was in the hospital, he did not hear from his family for four days, as Gentilly was flooded by the hurricane. When the flood receded, his wife Mona contacted Charity Hospital, and Gene was reunited with his family.[1]
Gene died in Louisiana on September 26, 1983, at the age of 58.
