Biography

John Baston was born about 4 Jun 1857 in Nuneham Courtenay, Oxfordshire, England, son of William Baston (1829 - 1912) and Caroline (Duffield) Baston (<1821 - 1890).


In 1861, John (3) was living in Nuneham Courtenay, England with his parents. He stayed home with his mom. His dad, William (32) was a farm laborer. His mother Caroline (39) took care of the home and family. George (5) and Mary Ann (11 months) both stayed home with their mother. His step-brother, Thomas Wakefield (12), was employed as a farm laborer, and his brother Stephen (8) was a scholar. [1]

In 1871, John (13) was living in Nuneham Courtenay, England with his parents. The census worked listed his occupation as an Agricultural Labourer. His father, William (41), was also an Agricultural Labourer. His mother, Caroline (50) took care of the family and home. His step-brother, Thomas Wakefield (21), and his brother Stephen (18) and George (15) were also noted to be Agricultural Labourers. His ten-year-old sister, Mary and brother Arthur (8) were both scholars. [2]

In 1881, John (23) was living at 44 Weldale St., Reading St Mary, Berkshire, England. He was employed as a furniture laborer for Vans and Carman. His wife Louisa (21) took care of the house and family. George (2) and Anna (5-months) stayed home with their mother. [3]

In 1891, John (34) was living in Portsea, Hampshire, England and was employed as a stableman foreman. His wife, Louisa (32) took care of their home and family. Arthur (3) and William (2) stayed home with their mother. George (13), Annie (12), Bertie (10), Lily (9) and Florence (7) were scholars. [4]

In 1901, John (44) was living in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England, and employed as a Gramway Stableman. His wife Louisa (41) took care of the home and family. Five-year-old Edith stayed home with her mom. His son Ernest (19) was a stoker in the Navy. A Stoker was someone who specialized in Engine-Room duties, the name was acquired from the days when ships were coal-fueled and Stokers were those who shifted coal. They joined to serve a period of 12 years. His daughter Lillian (17) was taking in laundry washings at home. Florence (16), Arthur (14), William (12), Eva (10) and Percy (7) were scholars. [5]
