His mother Caroline (39) took care of the home and family. George (5) and Mary Ann (11 months) both stayed home with their mother. In 1901, John (44) was living in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England, and employed as a Gramway Stableman. His wife Louisa (41) took care of the home and family. Five-year-old Edith stayed home with her mom. His son Ernest (19) was a stoker in the Navy. A Stoker was someone who specialized in Engine-Room duties, the name was acquired from the days when ships were coal-fueled and Stokers were those who shifted coal. They joined to serve a period of 12 years. His daughter Lillian (17) was taking in laundry washings at home. Florence (16), Arthur (14), William (12), Eva (10) and Percy (7) were scholars. [5]
John died on 9 Jun 1949 in Queen Alexander's Hospital, Portsmouth, Hampshire aged 92.
