Biography

Esther Ellen Bate was born on 18 April 1875 at Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Her date of birth was recorded in the 1939 Register.

In the 1881 census Esther was living with her parents James and Jane Bates [sic] at 74 Ramford St, St. Helens, Lancashire. She was aged 6 years.

In the 1891 census the family was living at 84 Ramford St, St Helens. Esther was aged 15.

Esther had a daughter named Eveline Bate born 1 February 1899 at St. Helen's, Lancashire.

In 1901 Esther was working as a domestic servant in the home of Francis and Margaret Falconer at 2 Union St, Oldham, Lancashire. Aged 26, she was the cook. There were 2 other servants in the home.

Eveline was living with Esther's parents at 38 Fleet St, St Helens. She was aged 2 years.

Esther Ellen Bate married Thomas Pass in 1905 at Oldham.

In the 1911 census Thomas and Esther were living at 99 Rock St, Oldham. Thomas, aged 35, was an iron turner at a textile machine shop. Esther, aged 36, was a laundress working from home. Eveline, aged 12, was still at school.

The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.

At that time this couple were residing at 203 Waterloo Street, Oldham. Thomas, aged 63, was working as a turner lathe hand. Esther was aged 64. Her date of birth was recorded as 18 April 1875.

Married daughter Eveline Radcliffe and family were living next door at 201 Waterloo St.

Thomas Pass died on 6 October 1957 at Oldham aged 81 years.
