Eleanor Bates was born on December 22, 1819, in Elmira, New York, the child of Obadiah Christian and Ruth. She had five sons, four daughters, and one infant child with Capt. Daniel Brown Clark between 1840 and 1863. Eleanor and Dan were married in New York in Orleans County on October 4, 1840, and moved to Illinois in 1844, left there in 1851, and traveled for about a year before settling on a farm near Greendale, Iowa, later moving to Council Bluffs, Iowa. She died on July 3, 1897, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, having lived a long life of 77 years, and was buried in the Clark cemtery. Eleanor was a member of the Broadway Methodist Episcopal Church, in Council Bluffs.
