Biography

Henry was born in Wagga Wagga on 22 March 1861[1].

On 19 March 1878, Henry was appointed as Junior Assistant Draftsman in the Land Titles Branch of the Registrar General's Department[2][3].

On October 5 1889, Henry married Maud Evelyn Powys, the daughter of a Sydney businessman, in Bourke[4][5].

On 17 July 1890, Henry and Maud's son Henry was born[6][7].

On 12 February 1891, Henry and Maud's infant son passed away in Bourke[6][7].

In 1891, Henry and Maud's second son Trevor Murray Baylis was born in the Marrickville district[8].

In 1894, Maud Sybella, Henry and Maud's first daughter was born in the East Maitland district[9].

In 1901, Marion D Baylis, Henry and Maud's second daughter was born in the East Maitland district[10].

In October 1901, Henry was transferred from the Maitland District Survey Office to Dubbo[11].

On 4th April 1904, Henry was promoted to Draftsman at the Department of Lands District Survey Office, Dubbo[12].

On 8 December 1905, Henry was transferred to the Department of Lands head office[13].

From at least 1914, the family lived at Campbell St Eastwood, NSW[14]

Henry passed away on 20th January 1918.

He had been working away from home at the Lands Office in Dubbo for the last fortnight, where he was relieving. He had returned home on the overnight train from Dubbo (in a sleeper compartment). At 8:45am Maud had walked along Campbell St to meet her father. He had alighted the overnight train at Strathfield and would have taken a suburban train to Eastwood. He turned the corner into Campbell St and Maud, seeing him continued walking in his direction. He did not look well to her and when they were a few yards apart, he collapsed in the street, close to home in Eastwood. He was dead when Maud reached him, of heart failure. Dr DG Hunter arrived within ten minutes, examined Henry and declared him dead[15][16][17].

Henry was buried at Rookwood Cemetery (Section AAAA_Zone B plot 1720) on 21 January 1918[18].

An inquest was held on 30 January at Ryde Courthouse. The reason for the inquest was that Henry had not died at home and that he had an insurance policy of £1000. Evidence was given by Henry's daughter Maud, Dr Hunter and Maud's Uncle Arthur Baylis[15].
