Biography

Mary (Beasley) Shelton was born in Kentucky.

Mary ("Molly") was the daughter of Phillip Beasley and Rebecca Hicks. The family came to Texas sometime after 1870, first to Waco, then settling in Falls County, Texas, near Chilton.^[1] In 1883, Mary married William Shelton. They had three known children together:

1. Agnes Shelton, who married Jim Barnes
2. Eulalia Shelton, who married first Don Juan Holt and then F. A. Kessler
3. Marion T. Shelton, who married Lethia Farmer.

William's whereabouts in 1900 are unknown; Mary appears on the census by herself in Grimes County with their three children (Agnes, Eulalia, and Marion). In 1908, he appears in the Houston City Directory, listed as a painter, living at 530 Cortlandt in the Houston Heights. By 1910, in both the City Directory and the Census, only Mary appears, widowed, living at 935 Oxford, William having passed away from pneumonia in January of 1910. Mary was working as a seamstress/dressmaker, and was living with her son, Marion (15) and her deceased daughter's child, Ruth Barnes.

In the 1920, 1930 and 1940 Censuses, Mary appears with the Barnes family; first with her widowed son-in-law, Jim Barnes, and later with her granddaughter, Ruth's family, the Lingles.

Molly passed away late in the summer of 1940 from cancer. In her obituary, five of her siblings are identified, but only one surviving child (Marion was omitted for unknown reasons).
