Biography

Marian was a Friend (Quaker)

Mariann was born on 27 November 1781 at Old Sampford, Essex. Her parents are named as Isaac (shopkeeper~) and Mary in the birth record of Thaxted Quaker Monthly Meeting.[1]

On 12 January 1804 Marian (as her name is spelt in the record) married Benjamin Gilbert Gilkes at Folkestone Quaker Meeting House, Kent. The Quaker marriage record describes her as daughter of Isaac Bedford of Plaistow, Essex and Mary, both deceased.[2] They had the following children:

  • Bedford, born at Devizes, Wiltshire on 4 May 1805[3][4]
  • Gilbert, born at Devizes, Wiltshire on 27 December 1806[5][6]
  • Alfred, born at Nailsworth, Gloucestershire on 5 October 1808[7][8]
  • Arthur, born at Nailsworth, Gloucestershire on 21 October 1810[9][10]
  • Oswald, born at Nailsworth, Gloucestershire on 23 May 1812[11][12]
  • Emma, born on 20 June 1813 at Nailsworth, Gloucestershire[13][14]
  • Amelia, born at Nailsworth, Gloucestershire on 10 June 1817[15][16]
  • Edgar, born at Nailsworth, Gloucestershire on 22 February 1821[17][18]

Marian died, age 46, at Nailsworth, Gloucestershire on 17 May 1827 and was buried on 22 May 1827 at Nailsworth Quaker burial ground, Gloucestershire.[19][20]
