Pvt. John E. Benedict was born in Waterford, New York in 1832. In 1860, he was living in Boone, Illinois with his father Thomas Benedict born in 1795, PA.[1]On 20 August 1862 he married Mary Jane Sanford, Boone, Illinois.[2]

Civil War

John enlisted with the Union Army at the age of 30 on 2 August 1862. He was living in Belvidere, Illinois working as a farmer. John was 5'9" tall, light complexion, blue eyes and had brown hair. He was mustered into Company G, 95th Regiment, Illinois Infantry on 4 September 1862.[3]

Pvt. Benedict was killed in battle on 19 May 1863 at Vicksburg, Mississippi. He is buried in Section G, 4549 of the Vicksburg National Cemetery.

John's wife Mary J. took out his military pension.[4][5]
