Biography

Thomas William Bentley, son of John & Mary, married Elizabeth Monk on 7 May 1846. Burke’s Family Records record his father was sometime Secretrary to the Bank of England and his grandfather, Edward Bentley, had been Principal of the Accountants' Office in the Bank of England.[1]

Thos W Bently was discharged from Pentridge Gaol in October 1878. He was tried at Beechworth on 12 October 1875 for making false entries in the books of a corporate body. He was sentenced for 5 years, 15 months, 18 months, cumulative. He was a native of London, his trade was bank manager. He was born in 1821. He was 5' 9 1/2 " tall. His complexion was fresh, his hair was grey, his eyes were hazel. He was discharged specially.[2]

From the Ovens and Murray Advertiser (Beechworth, Vic.), Saturday 12 October 1878, page 8:

Mr T. W. Bentley.— The Argus writes; It will no doubt be remembered that about three years ago the manager of a Beechworth bank and his assistant were sentenced, the former to seven years' and the latter to four years' im-prisonment for making false entries in connection with the bank accounts. The assistant served the period according to the regulations of the penal department, and was discharged from Pentridge two months ago. In the case of the manager it was considered that the sentence was severe. He had borne an excellent character during the many years he was connected with the bank, he was advanced in years, and there were other extenuating circumstances which induced his friends to petition the Governor to grant a mitigation of the sentence. The petition was complied with, and the ex-manager was liberated on Tuesday. Mr Bentley, we all know, was more sinned against than sinning, and his many friends in this district will rejoice on his restora-tion to liberty. He has suffered, and, without telling in facts that are painful, we trust in his later years, some sunshine will cheer his heart.[3]

Thomas, child of John Bentley & Mary Breen, died (age 60) in about 1884 in S Y, Victoria.[4]
