Benita's personal connections to San Gabriel as a Gabrielina Indian are very strong and she is featured in many newspaper articles about the area, but the family connections date back to long before the founding of Pueblo de los Angeles and Mission San Gabriel by relatives on the Anza Expedition in 1781 and decades before the Spanish Colonial Period (New Spain) in 1769. Her family was also part of the Rivera Expeditions. Some family came from Spain in the late 1600's. Her family tree (maintained by this profile manger) has over 500 records to date from Mission San Gabriel.
