Buel attended school in Gatesville and worked as a maintenance supervisor for the Texas Highway Department for 35 years, retiring in 1976. Upon his retirement, he became a full-time farmer and rancher. He was a longtime member of the Calvary Baptist Church, the volunteer fire department and Gatesville Masonic Lodge 197.
