Biography

Charlotte 'Challe' /Berry/[1][2][3] was born before 1766 in Virginia.[4] An alternate date of birth is before 1776, based on the fact that she did not need consent to marry in 1797.[5]

Abstract of will of Charles Berry,[6] 8th April, 1789.
Charles Berry, Sr., farmer
To wife, Mary, and son Robert's support to son Robert; to son John; to son Charles, tract in Washington County on Holston.[7]
"Item I give and Bequeath to my Daughter Challe Berry my Negro Girl Named Lucy and my Mare Named Mige a Saddle at five Pounds price Two Cows and a heifer her bed and furniture to be hers and assigns for Ever, and She is to have "[8]

Marriage

On 16 November 1797 she married James McChesney in Augusta county, Virginia.[9][10] An alternate marriage date is Oct-Nov 1797[11]
James and Charlotte had two known children:
  1. Nancy B. McChesney
  2. Elizabeth Ann McChesney
It is not certain that Charlotte was married to this James McChesney. She was young enough to be married to his son. But she married a "widower" and the son is not known to have married. Nor does the son mention her in his will. The father did not leave a will and I have found no record of a settlement of his estate. pph, 25 September 2012.

Inheritance from husband James McChesney

On 23 May 1814 Charlotte, widow of James, gave bond of $1,500 as administratrix of James's estate, Augusta county court.[12]
On 27 March 1815 - Land of James was to be surveyed and laid out for the dower of Charlotte, his widow.[13]
On 24 July 1815 an Inventory and appraisal of James's estates was ordered to be recorded.[14]

Charlotte died in 1816.[26]

Charlotte is buried in Old Providence ARP Church Cemetery - Old, Spottswood, AUGUSTA, VA, USA.[27]

Birth: 1776, Death: 1816.
I have found a probated will in Augusta Co. for Charles Berry dated Sep 1789, made of 9 Apr 1789. It lists his wife Mary (Cunningham) and sons/daughter: Robert, John, Charles, James, Elizabeth, Mary, Jean and Challe. I believe Challe is Charlotte.
The Virginia Marriage Licenses, Marriage Bonds and Marriages record, 19 Oct 1797 & 1797 Nov 14, James McChesney and Ro. Berry, surety. Widower James McChesney and Charlotte Berry, daughter of Charles Berry. Chalkley's.
Another source, the VA Marriages 1799-1799, says they married on 16 Nov 1797 instead. Lastly, the Col. Thos. Hughart Chapter DAR says Rev. Archibald Scott married them on 16 Nov 1797.
I strongly suspected that Charlotte married James McChesney, Jr. and not senior. The elder McChesney was 43 years her senior, at age 21 when she married. However, Jas Jr. left his property to his siblings and does not mention Charlotte and did not appoint an executor. His father was intestate. James the father died in 1814 per the church record (FB) or 1816 per the 1900's military issue marker and the son died in 1813. There is no record of Junior's first marriage (not found to date) but it doesn't mean he wasn't a widower when/if he married her. Her 1816 inventory mentions a "To one man Slave Siepo" and James' 1813 will says a negro man Seifico (or similar). I suspect this is the same man.
Augusta Co., VA: In May 1814, Charlotte, widow of Jas McChesney was bonded for $1500. as administratrix of his estate. The following Mar 1815, James's land was to be surveyed and lay out her dower, and in Jul 1815 his inventory and appraisal were recorded. Perhaps the survey/inventory/appraisal may reveal more as to which James she married.
ZL adds that Mary Cunningham Berry (burial unknown) is her mother.
