Biography

Isaac Best was born in 1823 in Yorkshire, England ^[1]. His parents are shown as Benjamin and Sarah Best (nee Batley).

In the 1841 census, Issac and his family shown as: Benjman 55, Sarah 50, Elizebeth 20, Abraham 15, Issac 15, George 15, Mary 13 and Sarah 11 ^[2].

Maria married Issac Best in 1846 in Leeds, Yorkshire, England ^[3].

The family immigrate to New Zealand arriving in Canterbury on the ship Rakaia 3 Sep 1882 as: Issac 50, Maria 40, Walter 18, Sarah 16, Clara 15, Herbert 9 ^[4]. In 1879, the first Best family siblings arrive on the ship Hereford as: Ellen 24, Ada 20, William 22, Frederick 26 wife Ellen 20, Saraha 2 and Maria 8mths; Benjamin Best 28 wife Sarah J 27, Arthur 3 and Horace 4mths ^[5].

Their golden wedding celebration was held at their residence in Kaiapoi in Dec 1896 and was attended by 23 family with one son arriving from England (William Henry Best) ^[6].
