Biography

Charles was born in Calstock, Cornwall, U.K. around 1831 to Charles Bettens and Ann (Waldron) Bettens. The Bettens family settled in St Hilary, Cornwall. Charles was a miner, possibly tin, copper, arsenic or silver in Cornwall.

He travelled from Cornwall (departing from Plymouth) to Adelaide, South Australia aged 24 by ship on the Burlington with Samuel Bettens (aged 22), and it lists a brother in Melbourne for both of them (possibly James or John). The brothers are recorded as being from St Hilary, Cornwall. The ship departed Plymouth on October 28, 1856, and arrived in Adelaide in 1857. 1

Charles was a miner in Australia, possibly copper in South Australia for 2 years and then possibly gold in Victoria. Charles died aged 55 in Sandhurst (now Bendigo), Victoria, Australia at Buckley Street Long Gully from chronic pulmonary phthisis (tuberculosis). Charles was buried at White Hills Cemetery and his wife Margaret Ann and father-in-law; Alexander Corbett are buried with him. His religion is recorded as Bible Christian. The grave number is 5153. The headstone records his age as 55 years on his death.

As recorded on his death certificate he had been in Australia for 27 years and married for 24 years to Margaret Corbett. His daughter Margaret is recorded as being 24 years old at the time of his death, but she was more likely 26.
