Augusta Betts was born on April 20, 1860, in Spring Hill, Hempstead County, Arkansas, to parents Chauncey James Harvey Betts and Louisa Virginia Foster Betts. Growing up, Augusta resided in Spring Hill Township, Hempstead County, as documented in the 1870 census. By 1880, she had moved to Hope, Hempstead County, where she pursued a career as a teacher, dedicating herself to educating the community's youth.
On April 14, 1885, Augusta married John Tilman Barr in Hempstead County, Arkansas. Together, they made their home in Hope, where they raised their family. Augusta continued to reside in Hope through the turn of the century and into the 1910s.
After the passing of her husband in 1912, Augusta found herself widowed. By 1920, she had relocated to Womble Township, Montgomery County, Arkansas. She later moved to Norman Township, Montgomery County, where she was residing by 1930.
Tragically, Augusta Betts Barr passed away on December 23, 1939, in Hope, Hempstead County, due to complications from fever and pneumonia. She was laid to rest alongside her husband at Rose Hill Cemetery in Hope, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to education, family, and community.
