Biography

Sarah was born in 1845, her birth was registered in Congleton, Cheshire, her mothers maiden name given as Weatherby.^[1] She was christened on 7 November 1847 in St Matthews, Manchester. Her parents are James and Ann Bickerton.^[2]

The 1851 census has severe water damage and appears to have been mid transcribed on family search but is correct on Ancestry. The family should read Bickerton not Bicherton, their birth locations Withington not Nottingham and the eldest child is Edward (male) not Sarah (female). Their youngest child is Sarah b.1847^[3]

She married Henry Poole in 1864 banns at the Cathedral, Manchester.^[4]

In 1871 Sarah can be seen with husband Henry, they’re living in Gorton, Manchester both aged 24. Henry is working as a Striker to a Blacksmith. Sarah has two young boys, Thomas aged 2 and Mark 9 months.^[5]

In 1881 Henry is not at home, Sarah is still living in Gorton and is seen as married with her four children, Thomas 12, Mark 10, Sarah Jane 8 and Henry 6.^[6]

Research Notes

Sarah’s death is recorded in he name of Sarah Poole Clough. The copy of her death certificate states the following ‘for Sarah Poole Clough read Sarah Poole, and please note in column 7 John Clough is wrongly described as the Widower of the deceased. Corrected on 17 June 1886 by me WN Edghill Superintendent registrar on the production of a statuary declaration made by John Clough and Henry Eaton’ ^[7]

It would appear that by the time of the 1881 census Henry and Sarah had become estranged, although she was pregnant with her last daughter Alice. In 1891 a young Thomas aged 22 and his newly married bride Emma have Sarah Jane, Harry and Alice living with them.
